You’ve made a great decision to schedule a professional air duct cleaning. Here in Florida, where our A/C units run nearly year-round, our ductwork accumulates a significant amount of dust, pollen, pet dander, and humidity-driven mold. Cleaning them out is one of the best things you can do for your home’s indoor air quality and HVAC efficiency.
So, you’ve booked your appointment with Ducts All Done. What’s next?
While our professional technicians handle all the heavy lifting (and cleaning), a little preparation on your part can make the entire process smoother, faster, and more effective. Think of it as prepping a room for painters, a few minutes of setup ensures a perfect result.
Here is your simple checklist to prepare your home for a professional air duct cleaning.
1. Clear a Path for Our Team and Equipment
Our technicians will be bringing in specialized, powerful equipment, including large-diameter vacuum hoses that run from our truck to your HVAC system.
- Create a Walking Path: Please ensure there is a clear, unobstructed path from your front door (or the closest entryway) to your indoor HVAC unit. This might be in a closet, garage, or attic.
- Remove Obstacles: Move any floor runners, toys, shoes, or small tables that could be a tripping hazard. Our team is extremely careful, but clearing the way helps protect both your belongings and our technicians.
- Secure Driveway Access: Our cleaning process relies on a powerful, truck-mounted vacuum system. We will need to park our vehicle in your driveway, as close to the entry of your home as possible. Please make sure your driveway is clear and accessible.
2. Provide 3-Foot Clearance Around All Vents and Registers
To thoroughly clean your system, we need to access every single air vent in your home. This includes all supply vents (where the cool air blows out) and all return vents (the larger grilles that suck air in).
- Move Furniture: Please move any furniture, like sofas, beds, dressers, or bookshelves, at least 2 to 3 feet away from each vent.
- Check Every Room: Do a quick walkthrough of your entire home, including bedrooms, bathrooms, and living areas. It’s easy to forget a vent hidden behind a nightstand or under a desk.
- Don’t Forget the HVAC Unit: We also need clear access to your main air handler/furnace. Please clear any storage boxes, cleaning supplies, or other items from the immediate area around the unit.
This is the most important step for a successful cleaning. If a vent is blocked, we can’t properly seal it or clean the duct branch connected to it.
3. Secure Your Pets (and Keep Kids Informed)
We love pets, but a duct cleaning can be a stressful event for them. The process involves unfamiliar people, large equipment, and a significant amount of noise from the vacuum system.
- Find a Safe, Quiet Space: The best plan is to secure your pets in a quiet room that is not part of the cleaning process (like a utility room or a crate).
- Consider a “Pet-cation”: If your pet is particularly anxious, arranging for them to spend a few hours at a friend’s house or a “doggie daycare” might be the most comfortable option for them.
- Inform Your Children: The noise can also be loud and unusual for small children. It’s a good idea to let them know what to expect or plan a fun outing for them during the service.
This step is crucial for the safety and comfort of your pets, your family, and our technicians.
4. Do a Quick Tidy-Up Around Vents
You don’t need to deep clean your home, but a little tidying goes a long way.
- Pick Up Small Items: Remove any small, delicate, or valuable items from tables or shelves located near your vents. This includes picture frames, vases, or collectibles.
- Why? Our equipment uses high-velocity air and powerful suction. While we are extremely careful to contain all debris within the ducts, it’s always better to have fragile items safely out of the work area.
5. Plan to Be Home (At Least for the Start)
You don’t need to supervise the entire cleaning, but we do require an adult to be present for the first 15-20 minutes.
Here’s why:
- The Walkthrough: Our lead technician will walk through your home with you to confirm the location of all vents and the main HVAC unit.
- Point Out Concerns: This is the perfect time to point out any specific concerns you have. Is one room particularly dusty? Have you noticed a musty smell?
- Answer Questions: We’ll explain our air duct cleaning process and answer any last-minute questions you might have.
After this initial walkthrough, you are free to stay or go. Many Florida homeowners choose to run errands or relax in a quiet part of the house, as the vacuum system will be quite loud.
What to Expect on Cleaning Day
Now that you’re prepared, what will our team from Ducts All Done actually do?
- Inspect and Protect: We’ll arrive, park our truck, and do the walkthrough with you. We will lay down protective drop cloths on your floors to ensure we leave your home as clean as we found it.
- Hook Up the Vacuum: We connect a large vacuum hose from our truck to your ductwork near the main air handler. This powerful system places your entire duct system under negative pressure, ensuring all dust, debris, and contaminants are pulled out of your home and directly into our truck.
- Agitate and Clean: With the system under suction, our technicians will go to each vent in your home. We use specialized tools, like high-powered air whips and rotating brushes, to dislodge all the caked-on debris from the walls of the ducts. The negative pressure immediately sucks it all away.
- Clean Vents and Grilles: We don’t just clean the inside. We also clean your vent covers and grilles before securely putting them back in place.
- Finalize and Review: Once every duct is cleaned, we’ll seal the access port on your main system and review the work with you. We’ll give you a clean “bill of health” for your home’s respiratory system.
A Note on Other Services: If you’re also having your dryer vent cleaned, please ensure the area behind your dryer is also accessible.
You’re All Set!
That’s it! A few simple steps are all it takes to get your home ready. By taking a few minutes to prepare, you help our team work efficiently and ensure you get the absolute best results from your service.
